Horse Feeding Tips Establish your horse's feeding program based on sound nutrition. Too much supplement is economically wasteful and may be harmful. MFA Easykeeper Horse feeds are "complete" and contain the required vitamins and mineral levels when fed as directed.
- Feeding horses requires good judgment. Focus on feeding each horse according to its individual needs and body condition. Adjust as needed.
- Regular feeding times are key. Set a routine for feeding, preferably twice daily at the same time each day.
- Feed the same amount each day. Avoid drastic fluctuations. If ration changes are necessary do so gradually. Blend an increasing amount of the new ration with a decreasing amount of the present ration over a 4 to 7 day period. This minimizes the chance of digestive upsets.
- Feed only top-quality feeds. Include hay that is free of dust and molds. Also, provide free access to clean, fresh water and MFA 5% Gold Star horse mineral at all times.
- Be sure to observe your horses' eating patterns. If group feeding, ensure that timid horses are fed separately. Daily time spent in observing your horse will be beneficial. Horses that don't readily begin eating when first fed should be watched closely for signs of problems.

How Fat Is Too Fat?
Fat ponies/horses are more likely to founder again, but even thin or normal-weight animals can founder. An excellent way to monitor the pony’s weight is to get a weight tape and check his weight every 10 days to two weeks. (Write it down and refer back to your chart!)
Check the fat around the top of his tail and through his lumbar area. If that fat gets lumpy or hard, founder or laminitis could be in the near future. The crest of his neck is one of the best places to tell if you are in for trouble. If it increases in size, thickness or lumpiness – WARNING!!!
Any horse/pony that has foundered should be restricted to the amount of grass consumed. A dry lot (a small paddock near the other horses that has most of the grass eaten out of it) is by far the best choice. There are grazing muzzles available, but they can be rubbed off by those that hate to wear them!
Some ponies/horses can tolerate small amounts of grass; others can’t. You will have to watch carefully for any signs of soreness any time he gets turned out where there is a lot of grass.
